Hans Narveson 1881-1958

Born at Roste, Aadal, Norway near Honefoss, Norway .June 2 1881 the youngest of eight children to Narve Larsen Jan. 16 1839 -1884 and Karine Korneliusdatter Dec. 24 1839 – 1910.

Hans immigrated to USA in 1896 with his mother Karine Narveson  To join his brother Christen Narveson 1863 – 1946  And his uncle Magnus Larsen 1846 - ???? in Iowa. They traveled on the Helka 2.

Some time latter they traveled to N.D. and settled near Dogden ND (Butte).  Where he filed for a homestead.  (NARVESON HANS   05 150N 078W 014 160        272002   PA        16715    12/16/1907)

Hans worked as a blacksmith in the Calvary Square at Fort Totten N.D.  For a short time and was blinded in one eye. He went on to Sheyenne N.D. where he operated a hotel with Ole Aasen. Where he met and later married Arnetta (Nettie) Gutterud April 25 1878 – March 6 1948.  She was born to Erick and Anna Gutterud at Kennsett Iowa

Hans farmed in West Antelope Township  later Oberon Township where he was township supervisor for many years. In 1944 they moved into the city of Oberon where he served as mayor. Well he was mayor the Oberon fire hall was completed.

Hans suffered from malaria and Dr. Terlechi came to the house several times to treat him. Hans only had one working lung for many years. A few years before he died Hans had a stroke and never fully recovered. Well he was mayor of Oberon he helped get money to build the fire hall.

Hans told me (Noel Narveson) a few stories and one I remember is that Hans and his brother Chris road bicycle from Butte N.D. to Fort Totten looking for work only to be robbed of what little cash they had and an old pistol. I don’t know if they got work then or not.

I remember well when Hans was mayor of Oberon, I often went with him up to Walt Burgstahler’s store where the city meetings were held. I don’t remember anything about the meetings as they were not of any interest to a young boy. But I always got a few penny candies from Walt to keep me busy.

Hans knew everybody in town and as a young child I often got very impatient waiting for him as he would stop and talk to everyone.  I can remember riding with Hans in his 1936 Chevrolet this was an adventure as he could not see very well. I remember him running in the ditch on the big hill east of town. The car was leaning very badly I thought it was going to tip over. I am told that it was indeed close to tipping over. I can also remember being sent up town by my Grandmother Nettie to tell Hans to come home. He could be found playing pinochle with some of his friends in the bar. They always played for money  50 cents a game and 50 cents a set, and often one of them would give me a 50 cent piece and I would forget all about telling Hans grandma wanted him at home.  50 cents bought a lot of things for a young boy in those days.
